Presented from an anterior (palmar) angle, the wrist and hand are rendered with the skin reflected to expose the palmar aponeurosis and the tendon-rich layers deep to it. Distally, the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus tendons course into the digits, with the lumbricals arising from the profundus tendons on the radial sides and running toward the extensor expansions. Radial and superficial in the thenar eminence, the abductor pollicis brevis is singled out in red, lying anterior to the first metacarpal and oriented longitudinally toward the proximal phalanx of the thumb. Bones of the carpus, metacarpals, and phalanges provide clear landmarks for tendon paths and insertions. Emphasizing the abductor pollicis brevis in the thenar compartment makes this view a practical teaching aid for median nerve function at the wrist, because denervation in carpal tunnel syndrome produces early weakness of palmar abduction and visible thenar flattening.
