Description

Anterior neck lymphatics are rendered beneath semi-transparent skin in an adult African male, with superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes aligned along the anterolateral neck. Submandibular and submental nodes sit inferior to the mandible in the anterior triangle, while the superficial cervical chain tracks along the external jugular vein over the sternocleidomastoid. Deeper, the internal jugular chain (deep cervical nodes) runs superior to inferior within the carotid sheath, extending toward the supraclavicular nodes at the root of the neck. Cervical vertebrae provide posterior midline orientation behind the visceral and vascular columns. This frontal perspective matters when you need to map predictable drainage pathways from the face, scalp, oral cavity, and upper aerodigestive tract to the deep cervical system. Metastatic spread from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma often first presents as a firm node along the jugulodigastric region (level II) or jugulo-omohyoid region (level III), and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy raises separate red flags in staging. Fine-needle aspiration, neck dissection planning, and ultrasound correlation all start with this surface anatomy. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy courses to teach cervical triangles and lymph node “levels,” in ENT and oncology texts illustrating nodal staging, or in patient-facing surgical consent materials explaining why a neck mass prompts targeted examination and biopsy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
