Arising from the anterior superior iliac spine on the lateral pelvis, the sartorius runs inferomedially across the anterior thigh in a superficial plane, crossing the femur before passing posterior to the medial femoral condyle. Near the proximal tibia it converges with gracilis and semitendinosus to form the pes anserinus on the anteromedial surface of the tibia, just inferior to the medial tibial condyle. Deep to this strap-like muscle lie key neurovascular corridors of the femoral region, while the patella, tibia, fibula, and the articulated bones of the foot provide bony context for distal alignment. Following the sartorius from pelvis to tibia matters because it is a reliable surface guide to the femoral triangle and adductor canal, and its distal insertion frames the pes anserine bursa, a frequent pain generator in runners and patients with knee osteoarthritis.
