Description
Arising from the parotid plexus within the substance of the parotid gland, the temporal branch of the facial nerve (ramus temporalis nervi facialis) courses superiorly and anteriorly toward the temporal region, crossing the zygomatic arch in the plane of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system. Along its path it travels in close company with the superficial temporal vessels near the preauricular area, then fans into terminal twigs over the lateral forehead. Frontalis, orbicularis oculi (superolateral fibers), and corrugator supercilii fall within its motor territory. A small structure, easy to injure. Functionally, this branch is the key conduit for brow elevation and upper eyelid closure, so its anatomy becomes clinically concrete during facelift (rhytidectomy), temporal brow lift, and repair of zygomatic arch fractures. The side-on dissection style clarifies why nerve injury can occur with overly deep dissection just superior to the zygomatic arch, and it helps explain postoperative asymmetry such as loss of frontalis action or lagophthalmos when orbicularis oculi innervation is compromised. Inclusion of adjacent facial muscles and vascular landmarks supports safe planning around the preauricular incision field.
