Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the male cerebrum is outlined beneath a transparent calvaria, with superficial cerebral veins traced over the gyri and sulci of the cerebral cortex. Bridging veins course medially from the cortical surface toward the dura, converging on the superior sagittal sinus along the superior midline and toward the transverse and sigmoid sinuses posteriorly, continuing inferiorly as the internal jugular vein. Inferiorly, venous channels around the temporal lobe and lateral fissure suggest drainage toward the cavernous sinus and superior petrosal sinus, while the brainstem and upper cervical spinal cord provide an anatomic anchor at the cranial base. Blue coding emphasizes the venous tree against the gray-pink parenchyma. Lateral venous anatomy matters because it is where cortical veins, bridging veins, and dural venous sinuses meet, and that junction fails in predictable ways. Tearing of bridging veins as they traverse the subdural space is the classic substrate for subdural hematoma, with a distribution that follows the convexity rather than an arterial territory. For neurosurgical corridors such as pterional or frontotemporal craniotomy, recognizing the relationship of the superficial middle cerebral vein to the Sylvian fissure and its connections to the sphenoparietal sinus helps avoid venous infarction when veins are sacrificed or inadvertently thrombosed.
