Description
Extending from the thorax into the neck, upper limbs, abdomen, pelvis, and lower limbs, the systemic arterial tree is organized around the ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta, with paired common iliac arteries continuing into the femoral and popliteal arteries distally. Superiorly, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery arise from the arch, their branches tracking laterally into the arms and cranially toward the head and neck. Venous return parallels this layout, with superficial and deep veins converging into the superior vena cava from the brachiocephalic veins and into the inferior vena cava from the common iliac veins, both positioned to the right of the midline relative to the aorta. A posterior perspective emphasizes the longitudinal course of the great vessels and their bilateral symmetry around the vertebral column. For teaching, this view clarifies where flow-limiting disease and procedural access actually occur: the abdominal aorta bifurcation and common iliac segment are common sites of atherosclerotic occlusive disease, while the femoropopliteal pathway underlies claudication and critical limb ischemia. Landmark relationships matter. Posterior mapping also helps conceptualize why thoracic aortic aneurysm or dissection can refer pain to the back and why endovascular stent graft planning depends on branch origins and distal run-off.
