Description
Posterior head and upper neck vasculature is rendered in a male adult with bilateral symmetry about the midline, tracing arterial inflow and venous drainage from the root of the neck to the scalp and face. Proximally, the common carotid arteries ascend in the cervical region and divide into external carotid branches supplying the superficial head and face, while deeper flow continues via the internal carotid system toward the cranial cavity. Laterally, the internal and external jugular veins and their tributaries track inferiorly toward the brachiocephalic veins, receiving blood from the scalp, face, and deeper cervical compartments. Dense distal arborization across the occipital and temporal regions reads as scalp and subcutaneous vascular plexuses. Depth relationships are clear. For teaching, a posterior perspective helps separate the superficial venous network of the scalp from deeper cervical vessels, a distinction that matters in both trauma and operative planning. Scalp lacerations can bleed briskly because vessels lie tethered within the dense connective tissue layer and fail to retract, and the pattern of drainage toward the internal jugular vein explains how infection can spread from facial and emissary venous pathways into intracranial venous sinuses. Posterior cervical exposure also makes the relationship of carotid inflow to jugular outflow easier to orient when discussing central venous access complications and neck dissections.
