Description
Spanning the lower abdomen through the proximal thighs, the venous network is rendered with emphasis on both the superficial and deep drainage of the male upper legs. Superficially, the great saphenous vein ascends along the medial leg and thigh to join the femoral vein at the saphenofemoral junction just inferior to the inguinal ligament, while the small saphenous vein tracks posteriorly toward the popliteal fossa. Deep to the fascia, anterior and posterior tibial veins converge into the popliteal vein, which continues proximally as the femoral vein and communicates with the profunda femoris vein and perforating veins; superiorly, flow is routed into the external and common iliac veins within the pelvis. Valve-directed perforators link superficial tributaries to the deep system. Clear landmarks. For teaching venous return, this proximal lower-limb focus matters because most clinically relevant reflux patterns map to a few junctions and segments. In great saphenous incompetence, retrograde flow at the saphenofemoral junction drives varicosities along the medial thigh and leg, a pattern you can track directly on this layout and relate to duplex ultrasound findings. The deep pathway also orients you for lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis, where thrombus in the femoral or popliteal veins carries a higher pulmonary embolism risk than isolated calf vein thrombosis, and where compression ultrasonography targets specific segments.
