Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the female skull, the zygomatic bone (os zygomaticum) is highlighted where it forms the malar eminence and the anterolateral wall of the orbit. Anteriorly it articulates with the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary suture, while superiorly it meets the frontal bone at the frontozygomatic suture, defining the lateral orbital rim. Posteriorly, the temporal process of the zygomatic bone extends toward the zygomatic process of the temporal bone to complete the zygomatic arch, a bony bridge lateral to the maxillary sinus and superior to the maxillary dentition. Inferiorly, the maxilla and mandible with full dentition are visible, with the cervical vertebrae aligned beneath the occiput. Lateral depiction of the zygomatic bone matters because it concentrates several surgical landmarks in one silhouette: the frontozygomatic region, the infraorbital rim continuation into the zygomaticomaxillary buttress, and the zygomatic arch overlying the temporalis muscle. Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures commonly disrupt these sutural lines, flatten the cheek prominence, and widen the lateral canthal region, so correlating the malar surface with the orbital margin helps plan open reduction and internal fixation. One clean landmark. The arch is also a frequent site of injury with trismus from temporalis impingement, and the lateral orbital wall orientation guides safe plate placement away from the orbital contents. Educators can drop this into head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor facial buttresses, orbital margins, and key sutures, and dental or maxillofacial texts can pair it with discussions of midface fracture patterns and occlusal change.
