Description
Running along the right margin of the cardiac silhouette, the right border of the heart is formed chiefly by the right atrium, extending from the superior vena cava superiorly to the inferior vena cava inferiorly. Anteriorly, the sternocostal surface transitions toward the diaphragmatic surface along the sharp inferior edge, where the acute margin is created largely by the right ventricle as it approaches the apex. Medial to this contour lies the interatrial septal plane and the atrioventricular groove, while laterally the right atrial wall defines the profile that abuts the right lung and pleura. On an upright PA chest radiograph, enlargement of the right atrium characteristically bows the right heart border laterally, while pericardial effusion tends to enlarge the overall silhouette more symmetrically, a distinction clinicians often anchor to this margin.
