Description

Seen from the right lateral aspect, the right auricle (auricula atrii dextri) projects anteriorly and slightly superiorly from the right atrium as a muscular, craggy appendage with prominent pectinate muscle ridging. Its base blends medially into the smooth-walled body of the atrium, while the free margin points toward the anterior surface of the heart. No vessels are included, so the auricular contour reads cleanly against the adjacent right atrial wall and the expected position of the atrioventricular groove. Clinically, the right atrial appendage matters because its trabeculated interior and narrow neck influence catheter behavior and device positioning during right-sided electrophysiology procedures. This is the structure that can be mistaken for thrombus, tumor, or pericardial recess on echocardiography or CT when the appendage is foreshortened or incompletely opacified. A clear lateral presentation also helps orient the auricle relative to common access routes for transvenous pacing leads and right atrial ablation targets near the cavoatrial junction and tricuspid annulus. Use this artwork in cardiovascular anatomy courses when teaching atrial morphology, pectinate muscles, and the distinction between the auricle and the main chamber of the right atrium. It also fits surgical and cardiology publishing needs where a vessel-free cardiac silhouette is preferred for labeling overlays or for pairing with angiographic, echocardiographic, or CT correlates.
