Arising from the anterosuperior aspect of the right atrium, the right auricle (auricula dextra, right atrial appendage) projects anteriorly and slightly superiorly, its pointed tip curving laterally toward the anterior surface of the heart. The pectinate muscle ridges line the auricular wall and sweep posteromedially toward the atrial cavity, while the base of the appendage blends medially with the right atrial free wall. Little else distracts. The emphasis stays on contour and surface anatomy rather than adjacent great vessels. Right atrial appendage anatomy matters because it is the most trabeculated component of the right atrium and a frequent site of catheter contact during electrophysiology procedures, where pectinate ridges can snag or deflect mapping and ablation catheters.
