Description
Anteriorly oriented, paired lungs are presented with emphasis on the inferior (diaphragmatic) surface, the pulmonary base, which appears broad and concave as it apposes the dome of the diaphragm. Superior to this base, the anterior borders and costal surfaces rise toward the apices, with the right lung typically larger and more vertically extensive than the left. Interlobar organization is implied by the lobes and their fissural planes, separating bronchopulmonary segments supplied by segmental (tertiary) bronchi and accompanying pulmonary arteries. Segmental anatomy matters. A frontal rendering of the diaphragmatic surface is a practical teaching angle because it links external lung topography to ventilation and drainage patterns of bronchopulmonary segments, the units surgeons and bronchoscopists think in when targeting disease. Segmental consolidation, aspiration, and obstructive atelectasis often respect these boundaries, and the dependent basal segments are frequent sites of pathology in supine patients. Radiologic correlation also benefits, since basal opacities on chest radiography and CT are interpreted against lobar fissures and segmental distribution rather than against the lung as an undifferentiated mass. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and respiratory system courses to orient students to lobes, fissures, and bronchopulmonary segments before moving into cross sectional imaging or bronchoscopy modules, and in publishing contexts that need a clear anterior reference for the pulmonary base and basal segment nomenclature. It also suits clinical education on postural drainage, aspiration risk, and segment directed resection planning such as segmentectomy or lobectomy discussions.
