Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the upper limb, the brachial artery descends on the medial side of the humerus, then continues into the cubital fossa where it bifurcates into the radial artery laterally and the ulnar artery medially. Proximally, the profunda brachii (deep brachial) artery branches posterolaterally from the brachial artery and tracks toward the radial groove, while the translucent humerus, radius, and ulna provide bony alignment in an x-ray style. Distally, the forearm arteries course along the radius and ulna, framing the interosseous interval and indicating the main inflow to the hand. Anterior arm arterial anatomy is not just a memorization exercise, it underpins everyday access and risk. The brachial artery is the target for noninvasive blood pressure measurement and a frequent site of trauma-related hemorrhage, while its division in the cubital fossa guides safe venipuncture and helps explain why an inadvertent intra-arterial injection near the median cubital vein can be catastrophic. Profunda brachii involvement also matters: humeral shaft fractures can injure this vessel in the spiral groove region, and collateral pathways around the elbow become clinically relevant when proximal flow is compromised.
