Description
Posterior to the male knee joint, the distal femur meets the proximal tibia at the tibiofemoral articulation, with the fibular head positioned laterally and slightly inferior to the lateral tibial condyle. Along the popliteal surface of the femur and around the margins of the femoral condyles, osteophytic bone spurs project irregularly into the periarticular soft tissue envelope. Articular cartilage caps the femoral and tibial surfaces, while focal erythema marks inflamed regions at the joint line and along cartilage-bearing areas. The patella is referenced by the metadata, but the posterior perspective keeps it anterior and largely out of view. Posterior osteophytes matter because they change the contour of the popliteal fossa and can mechanically limit terminal knee extension, a common functional complaint in osteoarthritis. Bulky spurs at the posteromedial femoral condyle and adjacent tibial plateau also correlate with pain during deep flexion and can complicate arthroplasty planning, where posterior condylar osteophyte resection is often needed to balance extension and protect the posterior capsule.
