Description

Shown in lateral aspect, the male cerebrum is rendered with prominent gyri and sulci, with the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure) cleaving the frontal and parietal lobes superiorly from the temporal lobe inferiorly. Deep to this lateral cortical surface, the fornix appears as a C-shaped commissural tract, arching beneath the corpus callosum from the hippocampal formation toward the diencephalon and mammillary bodies. Posteroinferiorly, the cerebellar hemispheres sit behind the brainstem, which continues inferiorly as the medulla oblongata. Color-coding the fornix in a lateral brain view matters because the tract is usually hidden from learners until midline dissections or sectioned imaging, yet it remains central to Papez circuit anatomy. Injury to the fornix during third ventricle or colloid cyst surgery, or from mass effect near the foramen of Monro, can produce disproportionate anterograde amnesia despite a largely intact neocortex. Callosal agenesis and hydrocephalus can also distort the fornix trajectory, a useful correlation when interpreting MRI. Use this asset in neuroanatomy lectures that pair surface landmarks like the Sylvian fissure with deeper limbic connectivity, or in clinical education materials on memory circuits, hippocampal pathology, and postoperative cognitive outcomes. It also fits radiology atlases and neurosurgical overviews that need an orienting lateral reference while naming the fornix explicitly.
