Description
Frontal pole (polus frontalis) forms the most anterior, rounded extremity of the cerebral hemisphere in this lateral image. The convex cortical surface at the rostral end of the frontal lobe is seen anterior to the superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyri, with the frontal pole sitting superior to the orbital roof and anterior to the precentral region that leads toward the central sulcus. Along the inferolateral margin, the anterior portion of the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure) defines the border between inferior frontal cortex and the temporal lobe, keeping the frontal pole clearly oriented in relation to the opercular region. Clinically, the frontal pole anchors discussions of prefrontal cortical function and vulnerability in anterior head trauma, where coup or contrecoup contusions frequently involve orbitofrontal and frontopolar cortex against the inner table of the frontal bone. Its proximity to the anterior cranial fossa and frontal sinus also makes this region relevant when correlating cortical injury with facial fractures, CSF leak patterns, or postoperative changes after frontal craniotomy. The fixed lateral perspective helps learners separate the frontopolar convexity from adjacent inferior frontal gyrus landmarks used when localizing expressive language cortex on the dominant side and when describing tumor margins, for example in low-grade glioma affecting anterior frontal networks. Neuroanatomy lecturers can place this illustration in modules on frontal lobe topography, gyri and sulci naming, and functional localization, while authors can use it to orient readers before introducing medial or basal frontal views in the same chapter.
