Description
Positioned along the lateral neck, the carotid plexus tracks the internal carotid artery superiorly toward the skull base while the external carotid artery and its proximal branches lie more anterior and superficial in the carotid triangle. Fine sympathetic nerve filaments, derived from the superior cervical ganglion, form a periarterial network that ascends with the carotid vessels deep to the angle of the mandible and anterior to the upper cervical vertebrae. Bony landmarks frame the field, including the mandible, temporal bone region around the external acoustic meatus, and the cervical spine with adjacent ribs and scapula. Teeth and the pinna provide orientation in the left lateral profile. Clinically, this is the viewpoint that clarifies how sympathetic fibers reach the head without traveling in the vagus nerve, a frequent point of confusion when teaching autonomic pathways. Dissection or surgical exposure around the carotid bifurcation and skull base can interrupt these periarterial fibers, and the illustration supports explanation of ipsilateral Horner syndrome after carotid endarterectomy, carotid artery dissection, or injury near the superior cervical ganglion.
