Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male vertebral column is traced from the skull base through the cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) into the upper thoracic spine, with the normal cervical lordosis curving anteriorly relative to the thoracic kyphosis. Superiorly, the atlas and axis sit directly beneath the occiput, and inferiorly C7 transitions to T1 at the cervicothoracic junction, where the spinous process becomes more prominent. Posterior elements (spinous processes and laminae) align posterior to the vertebral bodies, while the rib cage articulates with the thoracic vertebrae just caudal to the cervical segment and frames the upper trunk. Lateral orientation makes this a practical teaching view for sagittal alignment, because you can judge the relationship between cervical lordosis, thoracic curvature, and head carriage in one continuous profile. Clinically, it mirrors the way radiologists and surgeons think about the cervical spine on lateral radiographs and sagittal CT or MRI, including recognition of straightened lordosis after whiplash, degenerative disc height loss at C5 to C6 and C6 to C7, and the cervicothoracic junction that complicates both imaging and posterior instrumentation.
