Description
Seen through a transparent body overlay, the pediatric cardiovascular system centers on the heart in the middle mediastinum, with the aortic arch coursing superiorly and leftward before continuing as the descending thoracic aorta. Arterial pathways (in red) extend laterally into the axillae as the subclavian and axillary arteries and distally as the brachial, radial, and ulnar arteries toward the hands, while venous return (in blue) tracks proximally via superficial and deep veins to the subclavian veins and superior vena cava. Inferior to the diaphragm, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava run in parallel along the midline, giving rise to iliac vessels that pass into the lower limbs. Pediatric proportions matter. A child’s relatively smaller thorax and shorter neck change how you mentally map the great vessels, and this view helps when teaching why catheter and central line pathways (internal jugular or subclavian access) converge quickly into the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava. The red-blue separation also supports discussions of congenital heart disease physiology, where altered mixing and shunting can reverse expected oxygenation patterns and change what “arterial” and “venous” mean in practice. Use it in undergraduate gross anatomy and physiology modules to anchor systemic circulation before moving into microcirculation, and in nursing or pediatric medicine materials covering venipuncture, peripheral IV placement, and blood pressure measurement sites along the brachial artery.
