Description
Rendered as a standing female child in lateral profile with the arms slightly abducted, the illustration traces the cardiovascular system from the thorax into the head, upper limb, trunk, and lower limb, with arteries in red and veins in blue and a fine emphasis on peripheral capillary beds. The heart occupies the middle mediastinum, with the aortic arch curving superiorly before continuing as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta anterior to the vertebral column. Superiorly, the common carotid and internal jugular pathways extend into the face and scalp, while the subclavian vessels course laterally into the axilla to become the brachial, radial, and ulnar vessels distally; inferiorly, the common iliac vessels divide into external iliac and femoral channels that continue toward the popliteal region and into the tibial and fibular (peroneal) distributions. Small vessels dominate.
