Description
Anterior orientation places the small intestine centrally, with jejunal and ileal loops occupying most of the umbilical and hypogastric regions, framed peripherally by the colon. The ascending colon tracks superiorly along the right lateral abdomen toward the hepatic flexure beneath the right costal margin, while the transverse colon crosses the upper abdomen to the splenic flexure and continues inferiorly as the descending colon on the left. Inferiorly, the sigmoid colon turns medially toward the pelvis, and proximal small bowel segments align with the duodenum in the upper abdomen, partly retroperitoneal, as the bowel transitions from the stomach to the jejunum. This x-ray style, semi-translucent rendering matters because it matches how clinicians mentally map bowel against fixed skeletal landmarks on abdominal radiographs and CT scout views: ribs and costal margins bracket the flexures, and the lumbar spine and pelvic brim help you localize distal ileum and sigmoid colon.
