Description
Posterior osteology of an adult female skeleton is presented from the occiput to the plantar arches, with the skull (occipital bone and mastoid regions of the temporal bones) superior to the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral column and its aligned spinous processes. Laterally, the scapulae rest on the posterior thoracic cage and articulate with the proximal humeri, while the ribs curve anterolaterally from the vertebral column to frame the thorax. Inferiorly, the sacrum and paired hip bones form the pelvis, with the femora descending to the tibiae and fibulae, ending in the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges; in the upper limb, the radius and ulna run distal to the elbow toward the carpus and digits. Posterior views are where you teach the palpable landmarks and the load-bearing axis. Spinous process alignment, scapular position relative to the thorax, and pelvic tilt are the reference points for scoliosis screening, leg-length discrepancy assessment, and gait analysis, and they also frame common pain generators such as facet arthropathy, pars defects, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This angle also maps cleanly onto AP and PA radiographic concepts: vertebral levels, rib numbering, and the relationship of the pelvis to the lumbar spine read differently when you think from the back.
