Description
Sagittal section through the female uterus centers on the endometrium (tunica mucosa uteri), with the stratum functionalis lining the uterine cavity and the deeper stratum basalis applied directly to the underlying myometrium. Superiorly, the mucosa reflects over the fundus and continues inferiorly toward the isthmus and endocervical canal, maintaining a continuous luminal surface. Anterior and posterior endometrial surfaces face each other across the uterine cavity, while the basalis remains the fixed regenerative layer against the uterine wall. Clean midline anatomy. This medial plane view matters because cyclical remodeling of the functionalis, followed by shedding at menstruation, underpins both normal bleeding patterns and many common causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. It also provides the clearest teaching orientation for implantation biology, when endometrium differentiates into decidua and the decidua basalis forms the maternal component of the placenta. Clinically, the same layer distinction guides interpretation of transvaginal ultrasound endometrial thickness and informs hysteroscopic or dilation and curettage sampling, where diagnostic tissue is expected to come from the functionalis while the basalis is preserved for regeneration.
