Description
Rendered on an anterior view of the upper abdomen, the liver occupies the right hypochondrium and extends medially into the epigastrium beneath the right hemidiaphragm. The convex diaphragmatic surface lies superiorly, while the visceral (inferior) surface faces the stomach, duodenum, and hepatic flexure of the colon, with the right lobe lateral to the falciform ligament and the left lobe tapering toward the left upper quadrant. Inferior to the liver margin, the gallbladder fossa and porta hepatis region are implied by surface contour even when the extrahepatic ducts are not individually highlighted. Scale and position are referenced to the rib cage and anterior abdominal wall. Clear topography. Clinical teaching often starts with surface anatomy, and this kind of torso-based rendering keeps the liver anchored to landmarks clinicians palpate, percuss, and image every day. Hepatomegaly from congestive heart failure, acute hepatitis, or infiltrative disease changes the inferior margin first, so appreciating the normal costal relationship helps you interpret an enlarged liver on physical exam and correlate it with ultrasound in the right upper quadrant.
