Description
Centered in the right upper quadrant, the liver is shown in anterior projection beneath the right costal margin, with the dome of the right lobe rising superiorly toward the diaphragm and the smaller left lobe extending medially across the epigastrium. Its inferior border slopes inferomedially toward the costal arch, approximating the region where the gallbladder fundus would project near the right ninth costal cartilage at the midclavicular line. A semi-transparent body wall overlay clarifies the organ’s surface anatomy relative to the lower thorax and upper abdomen. Orientation is immediate. Clinically, this anterior surface view supports bedside correlation between hepatic anatomy and examination findings, including palpation of the inferior liver edge in hepatomegaly or the shifted position seen with hyperinflated lungs. The relationship to the ribcage matters when interpreting right upper quadrant pain, planning a subcostal (Kocher) incision for biliary surgery, or explaining why blunt trauma to the right lower chest can produce hepatic lacerations and hemoperitoneum. Teaching liver span and percussion landmarks is easier when the costal margins and midline are visible in the same frame.
