Running in paired columns on either side of the vertebral midline, the erector spinae mass is shown from a posterior angle as three longitudinal components, iliocostalis laterally, longissimus intermediate, and spinalis closest to the spinous processes. The muscle belly thickens inferiorly over the lumbar region, then narrows as it ascends toward the thoracic cage and cervical region, with a clear medial groove marking the line of the spinous processes. Lateral to the spinalis you would expect the longissimus to dominate the profile, while the iliocostalis tracks more laterally toward the angles of the ribs and the posterior iliac crest.
