Description
Running along the posterolateral forearm, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) is shown as a slim fusiform muscle belly arising from the lateral epicondyle via the common extensor origin and tapering distally into a long tendon. From a lateral perspective beneath the skin, the EDM lies posterior to the radius and lateral to the ulna, positioned between extensor digitorum medially and extensor carpi ulnaris more ulnarly. Distal to the wrist, its tendon courses deep to the extensor retinaculum in the fifth dorsal compartment, then tracks dorsally toward the fifth metacarpal and proximal phalanx to join the extensor hood of the little finger. Small structure, easy to miss. That tendon pathway matters in dorsal wrist pain and in operative anatomy of the extensor compartments: stenosing tenosynovitis can localize to the fifth compartment, and the EDM can be injured or adherent after dorsal approaches near the distal radioulnar joint. The view also supports teaching about ulnar-sided extension strength, since EDM adds independent extension to the small finger and can compensate when extensor digitorum slips are weak or when the extensor mechanism is disrupted.
