Description
Running along the dorsomedial forearm, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) appears as a slender muscle belly arising from the common extensor origin at the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and traveling distal to the extensor digitorum. Its tendon courses deep to the extensor retinaculum at the wrist, then continues toward the ulnar side of the hand to join the extensor expansion of the fifth digit, lying medial to the extensor indicis and lateral to the extensor carpi ulnaris. The ulna sits medial to the radius through the forearm, with the elbow joint and distal carpal row providing bony landmarks for proximal to distal orientation. Medial visualization of EDM matters because it clarifies how independent little-finger extension is achieved despite the close anatomic coupling with the extensor digitorum communis tendons. That distinction becomes practical in tendon lacerations across the dorsal wrist zones and in extensor tendon subluxation patterns under the extensor retinaculum, where EDM can be mistaken for a slip of extensor digitorum or confused with extensor indicis transfer planning.
