Extensor Digiti Minimi Muscle, Lateral View

Description

Arising from the posterior compartment of the forearm, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) is shown as a slender muscle belly on the dorsolateral forearm, with its tendon coursing distally toward the ulnar side of the hand. Proximally, it lies superficial to the posterior aspect of the ulna and tracks alongside extensor digitorum, while remaining medial to the more lateral extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis on a true lateral view. The tendon passes beneath the extensor retinaculum in the fifth dorsal compartment, then continues to the dorsal expansion of the little finger over the metacarpophalangeal joint. Functionally, EDM provides independent extension of the fifth digit at the metacarpophalangeal joint and contributes to extension at the interphalangeal joints through the extensor hood. Small structure, common source of confusion. A lateral perspective helps separate EDM from extensor digitorum during teaching and dissection, and it maps directly onto clinical tendon-compartment anatomy used in dorsal wrist pain localization, tenosynovitis, and surgical approaches that protect the extensor retinaculum and dorsal sensory branches of the ulnar nerve.
