Description
Running superficially over the anterolateral neck, the external jugular vein (EJV) descends from the parotid region toward the root of the neck, where it pierces the investing layer of deep cervical fascia just superior to the clavicle. Medial to it, the common carotid artery is suggested in its usual position within the carotid sheath, and smaller superficial tributaries can be inferred tracking across the sternocleidomastoid toward the main EJV channel. Inferiorly, the venous pathway continues toward the subclavian vein in the supraclavicular fossa, with the upper chest margin included to orient the vessel’s termination relative to the clavicle and manubrium. Surface anatomy remains readable. A critical landmark. Anterior views of the EJV matter because this vein is one of the few consistently visible cervical veins and is frequently used as a bedside gauge of venous distension when estimating right atrial pressure, yet its course is easily confused with deeper internal jugular anatomy. The illustration supports procedural planning in the low neck, where external jugular cannulation, supraclavicular incisions, or trauma evaluation can injure the vein near its fascial perforation, and where variants in caliber or duplication change what you can safely compress and where you can place a line.
