Description
Shown from a lateral perspective, the anterior jugular vein courses superficially in the anterior neck, descending inferiorly toward the suprasternal region where it typically turns laterally to contribute to the jugular venous arch. The sternocleidomastoid forms a prominent anterolateral boundary, while the vein lies within the superficial cervical fascia, anterior to the deeper carotid sheath that contains the internal jugular vein and common carotid artery. Posterior and slightly lateral, the external jugular vein tracks across the surface of the sternocleidomastoid toward the clavicle. Mandible and skull contours provide bony orientation superiorly. This angle clarifies a point that is easy to muddle in teaching: the anterior jugular vein is not the same structure as the external jugular vein, and it does not run within the carotid sheath like the internal jugular vein. That distinction matters during low anterior neck procedures, where superficial venous channels can be encountered during tracheostomy, thyroid surgery exposure, or emergency cricothyrotomy extensions toward the suprasternal notch. Bleeding here is rarely dramatic, but it can be persistent and obscures the midline.
