Description
Orbit-focused anatomy is presented in profile, isolating the globe within the bony orbital cavity and highlighting the extraocular muscle cone. The superior, inferior, medial, and lateral rectus muscles course anteriorly from the common tendinous ring at the orbital apex toward their scleral insertions just posterior to the corneoscleral limbus, forming a sleeve around the optic nerve. That pattern explains classic motility deficits, such as a CN VI palsy producing impaired abduction and horizontal diplopia, or a CN III palsy producing ptosis and a “down and out” resting position when unopposed lateral rectus and superior oblique dominate. The posterior convergence toward the annulus of Zinn also matters in orbital apex syndrome and in surgical navigation near the optic canal and superior orbital fissure.
