Description
Posterior vertebral anatomy is presented as a close-up of a single male vertebra, oriented to emphasize the spinous process projecting posteriorly from the junction of the laminae. A sharp fracture cleaves across the elongated spinous process, with the break line interrupting the cortical shell and exposing cancellous (trabecular) bone within, highlighted in red. Laterally, the transverse processes extend to either side, while the superior and inferior articular processes sit more medially at the pedicle-lamina junction, framing the posterior elements around the vertebral arch. Clinical relevance centers on posterior element injury patterns, where an isolated spinous process fracture often reflects an avulsion mechanism from powerful paraspinal and shoulder girdle attachments (classically the clay-shoveler’s fracture at C7 or T1, though similar morphology can be discussed across levels).
