Description
Presented in lateral profile, a single male vertebra is rendered with the vertebral body anteriorly and the posterior elements trailing posteriorly into the pedicles, laminae, and spinous process. Superior and inferior articular processes project superiorly and inferiorly at the junction of pedicle and lamina, forming the facet (zygapophysial) joints that guide segmental motion. The stress fracture is emphasized in red across the vertebral body, with associated involvement of the superior articular facets, and the transverse process base is visible laterally as a landmark for the costotransverse region in the thoracic spine or the costal process region in the lumbar spine. Orientation is clear. A lateral bony view like this maps directly onto how clinicians think about vertebral stability: anterior column failure in a compression fracture can coexist with posterior element injury, and facet disruption raises immediate concern for rotational instability and occult ligamentous damage. In osteoporotic wedge fractures the superior endplate is often the first to fail, while high energy trauma can propagate fracture lines through the body toward the pedicles, changing management from bracing to surgical fixation. Pain generators differ too, since injured superior articular facets can inflame the facet joint capsule and mimic radicular symptoms even without major canal compromise.
