Description
Arcing in a gentle S-curve, the vertebral column is presented in lateral profile with the thoracic vertebrae (T1 to T12) highlighted in blue between the cervical spine superiorly and the lumbar spine inferiorly. Cervical vertebrae sit anterior to the nuchal region in anatomical position and transition at the cervicothoracic junction to the thoracic kyphosis, after which the lumbar vertebrae continue into the lumbosacral junction, sacrum, and coccyx. Spinous processes project posteriorly along the curve, while the vertebral bodies align anteriorly to define the overall sagittal balance. Kyphosis is the landmark. Sagittal alignment of the thoracic spine matters because small changes in thoracic kyphosis shift the head and trunk position relative to the pelvis, altering load distribution across the intervertebral discs and facet joints.
