Description
Seen from a superior perspective, the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) occupies the gallbladder fossa on the visceral (inferior) surface of the liver, with the fundus projecting anteriorly and the body tapering posteriorly toward the neck. The cystic duct exits the neck at the porta hepatis region and courses medially to join the common hepatic duct, forming the common bile duct (ductus choledochus). Peritoneal reflections along the hepatic surface outline how this biliary viscus sits inferior to the right lobe and lateral to the hepatoduodenal ligament. Superior views matter when you need to teach, plan, or document biliary anatomy at the level where ductal variants and operative landmarks live. During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, correct identification of the cystic duct and its junction with the extrahepatic biliary tree underpins the critical view of safety, and misreading this relationship remains a leading driver of iatrogenic common bile duct injury. Small changes in cystic duct length, insertion angle, or parallel course with the common hepatic duct can alter the dissection strategy in Calot’s triangle (hepatocystic triangle). Orientation is everything.
