Description
Dominating the posterior calf, the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius form the superficial bulk of the triceps surae, spanning from the posterior aspect of the distal femur to the calcaneus via the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Superiorly, the muscle bellies sit inferior to the hamstring group, with biceps femoris lying laterally and semitendinosus and semimembranosus tracking more medially toward the knee. Deep to gastrocnemius, the soleus is partially visible along the margins of the calf, while the tibia remains medial and the fibula lateral beneath the posterior compartment musculature. Bony landmarks including the pelvis and sacrum frame the proximal field, with femora descending to the knee region and the outlines of the foot bones anchoring the distal view. Clear posterior topography. Posterior exposure matters because gastrocnemius crosses both the knee and ankle, so its relationship to the distal femur, popliteal region, and calcaneal tendon helps explain combined knee flexion and plantarflexion in gait and jumping.
