Description
Sagittal sectioning of the adult male skull exposes the cranial cavity and the medial surface of the encephalon, with the cerebral hemispheres occupying the anterior and superior vault and the cerebellum positioned posteriorly and inferiorly in the posterior cranial fossa. Medial cerebral landmarks logically visible in this plane include the corpus callosum arching over the lateral ventricle, the cingulate gyrus superior to the corpus callosum, and the parieto-occipital and calcarine sulci defining the precuneus and cuneus along the medial occipital lobe. Inferiorly, the brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata) continues toward the foramen magnum, while the nasal cavity and oral cavity sit anterior and inferior to the anterior cranial fossa, separated from the frontal lobes by the skull base. Bone meets brain. This cut plane matters because it ties surface neuroanatomy to the compartments and dural partitions that drive real clinical decision-making, especially the relationship of supratentorial cerebrum to infratentorial cerebellum and the narrow corridor of the brainstem. Midline mass effect from subfalcine herniation compresses the anterior cerebral artery against the falx cerebri and can infarct the medial frontal lobe, and downward transtentorial pressure threatens the midbrain in a way that a lateral surface view cannot teach cleanly. A sagittal section also clarifies why sellar and parasellar lesions distort the optic chiasm and third ventricle, and why posterior fossa crowding can compromise CSF flow at the fourth ventricle and foramen magnum.
