Description
Positioned within the cheek, the buccinator muscle forms a muscular wall deep to the masseter and superficial to the oral mucosa, spanning from the maxillary and mandibular alveolar processes and the pterygomandibular raphe toward the modiolus at the corner of the mouth. A lateral profile of a male skull frames its attachments, with the maxilla and mandible in articulation, intact dentition, and cranial sutures providing bony landmarks. Posteriorly, the buccinator lies anterior to the ramus of the mandible and blends with fibers of orbicularis oris near the oral commissure. The masseter is presented as the dominant superficial jaw elevator. Understanding the buccinator in relation to the mandible, teeth, and masseter matters when teaching mastication and bolus control, because this muscle is the primary cheek compressor that keeps food positioned on the occlusal surfaces rather than pooling in the vestibule. Clinically, the course of Stensen’s (parotid) duct as it pierces the buccinator opposite the maxillary second molar is a common exam point and a practical landmark during intraoral procedures and laceration repair.
