Description
Arising from the zygomatic bone just posterior to the zygomaticomaxillary region, the zygomaticus minor courses inferomedially beneath the facial skin toward the upper lip, lying superficial to the maxilla and lateral to the nasal cartilages. Its fibers run superior and lateral to the levator labii superioris as they approach the nasolabial area, with the oral commissure positioned inferiorly and laterally relative to its insertion. A lateral facial perspective also places the mandible and adult dentition inferior to the midface, while the temporal bone and external acoustic meatus sit posterior to the zygomatic arch. Clear depiction of the zygomaticus minor matters because it is often confused with adjacent elevators of the upper lip in both teaching and procedural anatomy. This is the muscle that helps raise the upper lip and deepen the nasolabial fold, so distinguishing its vector from the levator labii superioris and the zygomaticus major becomes relevant when planning botulinum toxin injection patterns for asymmetric smile or when discussing iatrogenic weakness after midface dissection.
