Description
Arising from the posterior tibia inferior to the soleal line, the flexor digitorum longus is presented as a slender deep posterior compartment muscle whose belly tapers into a long tendon descending distally toward the ankle. Medial to the fibula and deep to the superficial calf layer, its course contrasts with the more lateral fibularis (peroneus) longus on the fibular shaft, a relationship that helps orient medial versus lateral compartments at a glance. At the distal leg the tendon tracks posterior to the medial malleolus in the tarsal tunnel region, where it lies close to the tibialis posterior tendon and posterior tibial neurovascular bundle.
