Description

Sectioned in the lateral plane, the male heart is opened to expose the right and left atria superiorly and the ventricles inferiorly, with the interventricular septum forming the medial partition between ventricular cavities. Myocardium dominates the cut surfaces, lined by endocardium, while the pericardium outlines the external contour as a thin envelope around the cardiac silhouette. At the atrioventricular junction and at the ventricular outflow tracts, the fibrous skeleton of the heart is emphasized, including the annuli fibrosi that encircle and support the valve orifices. On the epicardial surface, coronary arteries and cardiac veins track within the coronary sulcus and along the interventricular grooves. Emphasis on the fibrous ring is clinically specific: surgeons rely on the annulus as the anchoring substrate for valve repair and replacement, and annular dilatation underlies functional mitral and tricuspid regurgitation in dilated cardiomyopathy. The lateral cross section also clarifies why calcification of the mitral annulus can complicate prosthetic seating and why the aortic annulus and adjacent membranous septum sit close to the atrioventricular conduction axis, a common concern during aortic valve surgery and transcatheter valve deployment. Good orientation in one glance. Use this artwork to teach cardiac gross anatomy in medical and PA curricula, to illustrate the relationship between myocardium, pericardium, and the valve-supporting fibrous skeleton in cardiology texts, or to support clinical education materials on valvular heart disease and coronary circulation. It also suits operative planning figures for annuloplasty, valve replacement, and discussions of annular pathology in echocardiography correlation.
