Description
Oriented in transverse cross section through the male heart, the cut plane opens the right and left atria superiorly and the right and left ventricles inferiorly, with the interatrial septum and interventricular septum separating the chambers medially. Between atrium and ventricle, the tricuspid valve sits on the right (anatomical right, typically more anterior) and the mitral valve on the left (more posterior), their leaflets forming an oval valvular orifice at the atrioventricular junction. Surrounding myocardium forms a thick muscular ring, while the pericardial contour frames the organ externally. Great vessel lumens may be seen at the superior aspect of the section, consistent with the aorta and pulmonary trunk near the outflow tracts. A transverse slice is the cleanest way to teach the spatial relationship of the mitral and tricuspid valvular leaflets without the visual confusion of chordae tendineae and papillary muscles obscuring the annuli. This perspective maps directly to axial CT and cardiac MRI, where annular size, ventricular geometry, and septal position guide interpretation of mitral regurgitation, tricuspid regurgitation, and functional annular dilation in right heart failure.
