Description

Paired lungs are presented with the trachea descending in the midline to the carina and dividing into the right and left main bronchi before arborizing into lobar and segmental branches within the parenchyma. The right lung lies to the viewer’s left and is larger, with superior, middle, and inferior lobes separated by horizontal and oblique fissures; the left lung, to the viewer’s right, has superior and inferior lobes divided by an oblique fissure. Tapered apices project superiorly toward the thoracic inlet, while broad diaphragmatic bases sit inferiorly in the concavity of the diaphragm. Hilar structures cluster medially, where the bronchi enter and pulmonary vessels would normally accompany them. This orientation gives a clean teaching view of lobation and bronchial anatomy, the landmarks that guide bronchoscopy and segment-based reporting on CT. The right main bronchus is shorter, wider, and more vertical than the left, which helps explain why aspirated foreign bodies often lodge on the right and why a right upper lobe bronchus can be an early site of post-obstructive change. Lobar boundaries also matter in surgery, where lobectomy follows fissures and segmentectomy tracks the segmental bronchi and their accompanying pulmonary arteries. Clear relationships.
