Description
Seen in lateral profile, the orbicularis oris forms a circumoral sphincter encircling the oral fissure, with the upper and lower lips emphasized and the modiolus positioned posterolateral to the oral commissure. Perioral fibers blend with adjacent elevators and depressors of the lips and angle of the mouth, while more superficial slips interdigitate with the buccinator at the cheek and with the platysma inferiorly along the lower face. Posterior to the perioral complex, the auricle sits lateral to the masseter region, and the mandibular and maxillary contours are faintly suggested deep to the mimetic musculature. Superficial facial and upper cervical muscle striations frame the mouth. Lateral anatomy matters here because orbicularis oris function depends on fiber direction and on its continuity with neighboring muscles at the modiolus, a convergence point routinely discussed in facial reanimation and cleft lip repair.
