Seen in lateral aspect, the cerebral hemispheric surface is draped by pia mater tightly apposed to the gyri and dipping into the sulci, creating the characteristic pia-arachnoid membrane contour along the convexity. Red arterial branches course superficially over the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, while blue cortical veins track back toward larger superficial venous trunks that run superiorly and posteriorly toward the dural venous sinuses. Along the inferior margin, yellow cordlike elements extend caudally from the brain base, consistent with cranial nerves and proximal brainstem connections in the cerebellopontine and basal cistern regions. No slack. Pia matters because it is the vascular meninx, and this rendering makes the subarachnoid vascular pattern easy to teach without the distraction of dura or calvaria. Neurosurgical dissection and microsurgical bypass planning often begin with a mental map of pial arterial territories (for example, cortical branches of the middle cerebral artery on the lateral temporal and parietal convexity) and the superficial venous drainage that can limit craniotomy corridors. It also supports clinical discussions of leptomeningeal pathology, including subarachnoid hemorrhage tracking along sulci and cisterns, and leptomeningeal carcinomatosis where disease spreads along the pia-arachnoid surfaces. Use this asset in neuroanatomy and meningeal layers teaching, in operative anatomy chapters illustrating pial vessel relationships during Sylvian fissure work, or in patient-facing stroke education where cortical arterial distribution is tied to lateral hemisphere deficits.
