Description
Bisecting the male kidney in sagittal section, the illustration exposes the renal cortex peripherally and the medulla centrally, with renal pyramids oriented superior to inferior toward the papillae. Red arterial branches enter at the renal hilum and course medially into the renal sinus before distributing as segmental and interlobar arteries between pyramids, then arcuate vessels sweeping along the corticomedullary junction and smaller cortical branches radiating toward the capsule. Blue venous tributaries parallel this layout, converging from cortical and medullary channels into interlobar veins and then the main renal vein at the hilum. Calyces and the renal pelvis occupy the medial collecting space, continuous inferiorly with the proximal ureter. A sagittal kidney section is the cleanest way to teach how blood supply tracks functional zones, with cortical perfusion dominating glomerular filtration while medullary vessels support the countercurrent system and urine concentration. Surgeons and interventionalists also think in this geometry: segmental arterial anatomy underlies partial nephrectomy planning, and the interlobar vessels running alongside the calyces frame the routes used in percutaneous nephrolithotomy and endopyelotomy. Bleeding during these procedures often reflects injury at the corticomedullary junction where arcuate vessels turn. Orientation matters.
