Description
Caput phalangis proximalis pedis forms the distal articular end of a toe’s proximal phalanx, with its convex condylar surface directed distally toward the basis phalangis mediae. The head lies distal to the phalangeal neck and shaft, and it broadens mediolaterally into a rounded trochlear profile that matches the base of the middle phalanx at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Dorsally, the contour transitions into the nonarticular cortical rim, while the plantar aspect sweeps toward the flexor surface where the joint capsule and plantar plate attach. Bone texture is crisp. This distal head is where toe alignment problems become mechanically obvious: hammer toe and claw toe deformities load the PIP joint, promoting capsular laxity dorsally and contracture plantarly, with secondary osteophyte formation along the dorsal margin of the head.
