Inguinal Ligament as, Lateral View

Description

Running from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle, the inguinal ligament is rendered in lateral profile as a thickened inferior border of the external oblique aponeurosis, draping anteroinferiorly across the groin. Superolateral to it sit the iliac crest and anterior ilium, while the pubic body lies inferomedially toward the midline. Deep and posterior to the ligament, the hip joint region is framed by the acetabulum and proximal femur, here shown with a total hip arthroplasty prosthesis seated within the acetabular component. Superiorly, the lower lumbar vertebrae and adjacent ribs provide axial context behind the hemipelvis. A clean lateral angle on the inguinal ligament helps clarify a frequent teaching point: it is not a free cord but a fascial thickening that forms the floor of the inguinal canal and the superior boundary of the femoral triangle. That relationship matters when you are explaining why femoral hernias pass inferior to the inguinal ligament, medial to the femoral vein, or when mapping the course of the ilioinguinal and genitofemoral nerves relative to common groin incision lines. Alignment cues from the pelvis and lumbar spine also help when correlating groin pain to hip pathology, including postoperative discomfort after total hip replacement, where surgical approaches traverse anterior soft tissue planes near the ligament. Orthopaedic teaching files can pair this view with anterior and medial groin diagrams to contrast hip joint landmarks with inguinal canal and femoral canal anatomy.
